"I saw your nuts, Mommy"

Journal entries from a mom of 4 little boys

  • Jan 4, 2016 - I'm not sure why I bother closing the bathroom door. Inevitably, one of the 4 ninjas in the next room opens it, walks across the bathroom, comes up behind me in the closet, and it's always, Always, ALWAYS when I'm in the process of pulling up my pants. I turn around still not knowing someone is there and jump out of my skin as I see Adrian standing there with a smirk on his face telling me, "I saw your nuts, Mommy."

After a long, taxing day that is really the third in a row just like it, I decided to make an exception tonight and turn on the tv. I didn't know what I wanted to watch with the boys, but I didn't want it to be anything in the realm of Pokémon or the usual things they watch on Saturday mornings.

I was scrolling through Netflix suggestions when I saw it. Annie. One of my favorite movies as a kid, and I haven't seen it in years. I still remember all the feelings and emotions I always had when watching it. I wondered if it might be too old for the boys to appreciate, but, from the first scene, the living room was quiet and all eyes were on the tv.

Javi, in his usual fashion, didn't miss a single detail that even had little to do with the story itself. He noticed a portrait of George Washington on the wall behind Mr. Warbucks that I'd never paid attention to during any of the dozens of times I've watched it. And, also in true Javi style, he added a little tidbit. "Mommy, you know why George Washington never smiles in his pictures? Because he doesn't have any teeth."

So tonight, while showing my youngins something I love, Javi added a new association to this movie for me. Forever I will notice that GW portrait, and I'll remember that he isn't smiling because he didn't have any teeth. Going off script this Wednesday evening was a great choice. #OhAndCarolBurnettIsStillAmazing
